Community Festival of Contemporary Theatre and Arts UM UM announces an open call for sound artists wishing to participate in SYMPOSIOUM MUSICUM, which will take place from August 26th till September 3rd, 2019 in the northeast of Slovakia. Why sound instead of silence? How to record sounds so that they are performative? Symposium Musicum wants to explore ways of narration through sound. Sound that creates language, installation, performance. Symposium Musicum aims to define a creative attitude to sound media, from body and voice to musical instruments and computer, in a way where technical and aesthetic knowledge is capable of dialogue with the environment, performing arts, society and memory. An ecological perception of sound has the possibility of re-elaborate the present and to challenge the modernist paradigm of rural territories perceived as simulacra of the past.
The topic of the festival UM UM in 2019 is about the relationship between Romani and Slovaks in our contemporary society. During Symposium Musicum we will walk from Stara Lubovna to the surrounding villages and ghettos populated by the gypsy communities. In three symbolic places we will temporarily settle by setting up a mobile camp, an installation that will host the life of the community, and that will turn into a forum. The camp directs intuitively on practices of deterritorialization, desubjectification and decolonization, a critical and resistant common environment in which to experiment strategies of adaptation to the transforming world, train a nomadic sensibility and incorporate differences. This could lead to a Roma cultural understanding of the value of movement and simultaneity, transition and adaptability. We mean Symposium Musicum as a meeting place that favours proximity, collaboration, hybridization and social relationships.
The participant to Symposium Musicum has interest, energy, endurance and desire to discover and to offer in a peer to peer relationship. It is necessary to ensure the presence throughout the whole period of the project.
Participants do not pay any fees. Basic technical equipment is provided; in case of special requirements, let us know beforehand. Travel costs are paid by participants themselves. Participants will be selected based on: a curriculum vitae, a motivation letter and an example of their works.
«Furthermore, the camp moves beyond the individual and the collective, moves beyond the human, as the subject of the political. The camp incorporates history and archive, space and nature, protest, resistance and critique. It incorporates trajectories of eviction and expulsion, collateral damage and flight; it takes up new forms of temporality and can posit new claims against capital, sovereignty, the nation-state and regimes of citizenship.» E. Brooks, “Camp”, in Posthuman Glossary, curated by R. Braidotti, M. Hlavajova, 2018
